Cortinarius hemitrichus Fr. subgenus Telamonia Cap 2-5cm across, conical to hemispherical, then flatfish with an umbo; cinnamon brown under the dense layer of tiny white hair scales; hygrophanous. Gills adnexed; pale brownish then cinnamon. Stem 30-60 x 3-8mm, base may be swollen; woolly white all over with white, ring-like zones. Flesh pallid when dry, brown where wet, sometimes with a hint of violet when young. Odor none. Taste slight but distinct. Spores ellipsoid, finely roughened, 7-8 x 4-5µ, quotient 1.65. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in mixed woods, especially with birch. Found in eastern and central North America and Europe. Season August-October. Not edible. |
